General Motors plans to launch new battery tech by 2028

General Motors (GM) is strategically evolving its battery technology to meet changing global demands.
By 2028, the automotive giant plans to commercialize two distinct battery chemistries, aiming to diversify its reach beyond just electric vehicles (EVs).
One major focus is sodium-ion batteries, developed with startup Peak Energy.
These are designed for large-scale energy storage and data centers.
Because sodium is abundant and the batteries require no active cooling, they offer a cheaper, more sustainable, and durable alternative to lithium-based systems.
Simultaneously, GM is refining its EV strategy by pivoting toward lithium manganese-rich (LMR) batteries.
Intended primarily for large trucks and SUVs, LMR cells aim to provide the high energy density of expensive nickel-based batteries but at a fraction of the cost.
By utilizing larger prismatic cells, GM hopes to significantly reduce vehicle weight and reliance on costly materials like cobalt.
This shift reflects a clever response to the current "tepid" EV market.
By localizing supply chains and tapping into the booming demand for grid-scale energy storage, GM is positioning itself to be more than just a car company, focusing on long-term profitability and resource independence.
