As summer approaches in Philadelphia, public health officials are once again ramping up efforts to protect residents from the West Nile virus (WNV).

This seasonal initiative, led by the Philadelphia Department of Public Health and state partners, runs from May through October to combat the threat posed by infected mosquitoes.

While most people infected with WNV do not show symptoms, a small percentage can face severe, life-threatening complications, particularly older adults and those with compromised immune systems.

Because there is no specific vaccine or cure for the virus, prevention remains the best defense.

Officials advise residents to wear long-sleeved clothing, use EPA-registered insect repellent, and remove standing water from properties where mosquitoes thrive.
