Founded in 2001 in Shanghai, the organization has evolved from a small regional security bloc known as the 'Shanghai Five' into a powerful transregional body.
Today, it counts ten nations among its members, including powerhouses like China, Russia, India, and Iran.
Guided by the 'Shanghai Spirit'—a philosophy centered on mutual trust and respect for cultural diversity—the SCO has shifted its focus beyond traditional security concerns like counter-terrorism.
During the 2026 summit in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, leaders championed the motto 'Together towards Sustainable Peace, Development and Prosperity.'
