In June 2026, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. traveled to Kazan, Russia, to co-chair the ASEAN-Russia Commemorative Summit.
This event marked the 35th anniversary of dialogue relations and served as a significant milestone, being the President’s first visit to the country.
Interestingly, this trip occurred nearly 50 years after his father, former President Ferdinand Marcos Sr., established diplomatic ties with the Soviet Union in 1976.
As the current ASEAN Chair, President Marcos led discussions under the theme 'Navigating Our Future, Together.'
The summit prioritized regional unity and the adoption of the Kazan Declaration and a Comprehensive Plan of Action for 2026–2030.
Key agenda items included enhancing food and energy security, as well as fostering cooperation in digital transformation, trade, and science.
On the sidelines, President Marcos met with President Vladimir Putin to discuss bilateral interests, including energy and trade collaboration.
By engaging with Russia, the Philippines continues to demonstrate its commitment to a balanced, national-interest-driven foreign policy, aiming to strengthen international ties while upholding regional stability.
