On June 11, 2026, Mexico made history by winning its first-ever World Cup opening match.
In front of 80,000 electric fans at the iconic Estadio Azteca, Mexico defeated South Africa 2-0.
This victory ended a frustrating streak, as Mexico had failed to win any of their previous seven World Cup openers.
Estadio Azteca also made history as the first stadium to host matches in three separate World Cups (1970, 1986, and 2026).
Julián Quiñones scored the tournament's first goal in the 9th minute, and Raúl Jiménez later added a header, marking his first World Cup goal.
The game was highly physical, setting a record for an opening match with three red cards.
Additionally, 17-year-old Gilberto Mora became the youngest player to ever represent Mexico in a World Cup.
