On July 29, 2026, X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, reached a settlement with the World Federation of Advertisers (WFA), marking the end of a high-profile antitrust legal battle.
The dispute began in August 2024, when X sued the WFA and its affiliate, the Global Alliance for Responsible Media (GARM), claiming they organized an illegal boycott that cost the platform significant advertising revenue after Elon Musk’s acquisition.
X argued that GARM’s brand-safety standards were used to pressure companies to pull their ads.
Although a federal judge initially dismissed the case in March 2026, X appealed, prolonging the conflict until this recent agreement.
Under the settlement terms, which remain financially undisclosed, the WFA has agreed to shut down GARM permanently.
While the main litigation is over, the status of legal challenges against individual advertisers remains ongoing.
This resolution signifies a new chapter for X as it seeks to rebuild its ties with global brands, emphasizing a shared commitment to innovation and freedom of speech within the advertising ecosystem.
