In June 2026, Sudan took a vital step toward global financial reintegration.
The Central Bank of Sudan announced that Electronic Banking Services (EBS), a key local firm, has been officially accredited as a SWIFT Service Bureau.
This milestone makes Sudan one of only five countries in the Middle East and Africa to host such a bureau, enabling local banks to securely connect to the global financial messaging network.
This development is crucial, as Sudan’s banking sector has struggled significantly due to long-standing sanctions, political instability, and the devastating 2023 civil war, which forced over 600 bank branches to close.
With traditional infrastructure damaged, mobile and digital banking became the country's financial lifeline.
By modernizing its infrastructure through EBS, Sudan aims to improve cybersecurity, streamline international trade, and support remittances.
While the restoration of SWIFT messaging is a massive leap forward, it does not immediately resolve all challenges; Sudanese banks still face hurdles in establishing full correspondent relationships with foreign lenders.
However, this strategic move signals a pivot from survival toward building a resilient, modern architecture designed to reconnect the nation with global markets despite ongoing hardships.
