Over 1,000 hidden coral reefs discovered off the Australian coast

Scientists have recently unveiled a major breakthrough in marine science: the mapping of over 1,000 previously undiscovered coral reefs off the northern coast of Australia.

This project, a collaborative effort between the Australian Institute of Marine Science and the University of Queensland, provides the first comprehensive view of these hidden ecosystems stretching from Western Australia to the Cape York Peninsula.

Researchers were able to map these reefs without setting sail, instead using clever satellite imagery analysis.

In total, the team identified over 3,600 coral reefs and 2,900 rocky reefs.

Historically, these areas were overlooked in conservation planning because existing maritime charts were designed primarily for navigation rather than ecological study.
