In late August 2026, Academy Award-winning director Guillermo del Toro officially clarified that he will not be attending Crunchyroll's inaugural 'Anime Future Forum.'
Scheduled for October 7, 2026, in New York City, the event was intended to be an exclusive summit focused on the future of animation.
Crunchyroll had initially promoted del Toro and James Gunn as headliners, which sparked significant controversy.
Many anime fans expressed concerns regarding the 'Hollywoodization' of the industry, fearing that Western corporate influence might dilute the authentic Japanese essence of their favorite medium.
The backlash grew quickly, prompting del Toro to take to social media.
With his quick withdrawal, the forum now faces uncertainty regarding its prestige, leaving Crunchyroll to navigate the fallout of using high-profile Hollywood names to promote an event aimed at an audience that values cultural authenticity above industry star power.
