Observing Black Maternal Health Week to Address Healthcare Disparities
Every year from April 11th to 17th, the United States observes Black Maternal Health Week.
Founded by the Black Mamas Matter Alliance, this campaign highlights the experiences of Black mothers and advocates for birth justice.
Currently, Black women face a maternal mortality rate three to four times higher than White women, a crisis largely driven by systemic racism, implicit bias in medicine, and unequal access to quality care.
To address these disparities, advocates push for policy reforms like expanding Medicaid for postpartum care and requiring implicit bias training for healthcare providers.
There is also a major focus on supporting community-led solutions, such as doula and midwifery care, which provide essential support during pregnancy and birth.
Ultimately, Black Maternal Health Week is a call to action.
It moves beyond highlighting trauma to celebrate 'Justice and Joy,' striving to create a future where every birthing person can thrive in a safe and supportive environment.
