On January 22, 2026, the United States officially ended its long-standing membership with the World Health Organization (WHO), a move initiated by President Donald Trump via Executive Order 14155.
The U.S. government justified the withdrawal by citing concerns over the organization's governance, alleged mismanagement during the COVID-19 pandemic, and the belief that the U.S. carried an unfair financial burden.
As the WHO's largest donor, the U.S. provided roughly 12–15% of its funding.
This withdrawal has triggered a severe financial crisis for the agency, leading to a significant budget reduction and the elimination of nearly 3,000 staff positions.
Furthermore, the loss of U.S. participation threatens vital global health initiatives, including programs focused on malaria, HIV/AIDS, and tuberculosis.
By cutting ties, the U.S. has also created gaps in global disease surveillance and emergency preparedness.
While individual American scientists continue to contribute in technical capacities, the lack of formal U.S. involvement represents a major shift in global health governance, leaving experts concerned about the world's ability to effectively respond to future health emergencies.
