On August 17, 2026, the White House introduced the National Security Science & Technology Strategy (NSSTS).
The strategy is built on four core pillars: maintaining a competitive edge in critical domains like AI and space, building resilient supply chains, accelerating innovation through a 'fail fast' culture, and protecting sensitive research from foreign exploitation.
The document identifies 14 critical technology areas, including semiconductors and biotechnology, which are essential for future security.
Building upon the 2021 NSPM-33 directive, the new strategy introduces more advanced safeguards, such as automated vetting for funding proposals and increased counter-intelligence support.
A major focus is balancing necessary protection with the open, collaborative spirit that fuels American innovation.
Furthermore, the U.S. aims to attract top global talent to strengthen its workforce in these vital sectors.
By fostering a secure yet agile research environment, the government hopes to ensure that technological advancements continue to support both national security and economic growth.
