Vietnam is taking bold steps to tackle the chronic issue of hospital overcrowding that has long plagued its healthcare system.
Despite high insurance coverage, major central hospitals frequently face occupancy rates well over 100%, leading to patients sharing beds or waiting in hallways.
To address this, the government is shifting away from a 'hospital-centric' model toward a more efficient, decentralized approach.
Major cities like Ho Chi Minh City have already inaugurated large, modern regional facilities, while the Ministry of Health is fast-tracking new wings for national landmarks like Bach Mai and Viet Duc Hospital.
However, building infrastructure is only half the battle.
Beyond mere construction, officials are repurposing surplus public buildings for specialized medical use and aiming for a national target of 45 beds per 10,000 people by 2030.
Ultimately, these efforts are not just about adding more beds; they are about improving patient flow, enhancing safety, and ensuring that quality healthcare is accessible to everyone without the burden of excessive wait times.
