Moon Passes In Front of Jupiter in Rare Celestial Event
Updated at: September 8, 2026 at 03:15 AM
On September 8, 2026, stargazers across North America are in for a rare treat: a lunar occultation.
This captivating event occurs when the Moon, appearing as a slender crescent, passes directly in front of Jupiter, hiding the massive gas giant from our view for approximately one hour.
Because the Moon sits relatively close to Earth, its position varies by location, meaning this event is only visible from specific regions, including parts of the United States, Canada, Alaska, and the Caribbean.
Unlike many astronomical displays that happen at night, this occultation takes place during the day.
Experts recommend using binoculars or a small telescope, but they provide a crucial safety warning: never point optical equipment near the Sun, as this can cause permanent eye damage.
The planet will disappear behind the Moon’s sunlit limb and emerge from the dark edge about an hour later.
If you miss this rare daytime encounter, don't worry—a more spectacular occultation occurs on October 6, 2026, when the Moon will cover both Jupiter and its four Galilean moons under the cover of a dark night sky.
