As of mid-June 2026, an Ebola outbreak caused by the Bundibugyo virus continues to impact the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and Uganda.
Officially declared on May 15, 2026, the situation has prompted global concern, with the WHO designating it a Public Health Emergency of International Concern.
In the DRC, particularly in the Ituri province, 676 cases and 136 deaths have been recorded.
Uganda has reported 19 confirmed cases, primarily in the Kampala area.
The Bundibugyo virus presents a unique challenge because, unlike other strains, there are currently no approved vaccines or specific therapeutics available to treat it.
Efforts are further complicated by regional insecurity and population displacement in eastern DRC, which hinder surveillance and aid access.
To address this, a joint response plan from the Africa CDC and WHO has been launched, seeking $518 million in international funding.
With previous fatality rates for this virus ranging between 30% and 50%, monitoring and rapid response remain critical priorities for health organizations working to contain the spread across the region.
