On September 14, 2026, the Republic of Djibouti reached a significant milestone in its diplomatic relations by becoming the 72nd nation to join the Artemis Accords.
This international framework, led by NASA and the United States, sets essential guidelines for the peaceful and sustainable exploration of the Moon, Mars, and beyond.
The agreement was formalized at NASA Headquarters in Washington, D.C., with Ambassador Mohamed Siad Douale representing Djibouti.
While the Artemis Accords are not a binding treaty, they serve as a series of commitments based on the 1967 Outer Space Treaty.
Key principles include operational transparency, the sharing of scientific data, and responsible conduct, such as reducing orbital debris.
For Djibouti, this move reflects a growing ambition to participate in the global space economy and aligns the nation with a diverse coalition of countries promoting safe and cooperative behavior in space.
While there are no immediate plans for specific lunar missions, this diplomatic step signals Djibouti's interest in the future of aerospace, marking a notable addition to the expanding international consensus on how humanity should explore the stars.
