Canada has officially launched its National School Food Program, a landmark initiative designed to provide nutritious meals to students across the country.
Before this program, Canada stood alone among G7 nations as the only country without a federal school food strategy.
Announced in Budget 2024 with a $1 billion commitment, the program is now a permanent fixture, with ongoing annual funding of $216.6 million starting in 2029.
By collaborating with all 13 provinces and territories, the federal government aims to feed an additional 400,000 children every year.
The initiative does more than just serve meals; it addresses food insecurity, enhances classroom concentration, and offers significant financial relief, potentially saving families with two children up to $800 annually on groceries.
Beyond food, the program invests in infrastructure like kitchen equipment and supports culturally appropriate, Indigenous-led meal solutions.
This effort marks a major shift from a fractured, local approach to a standardized, nationwide model.
As part of a broader strategy including dental care and affordable child care, the National School Food Program is a vital step toward reducing the cost of living and ensuring every child has the fuel they need to succeed.
