In July 2026, residents across New York State faced a familiar challenge as thick wildfire smoke drifted south from western Ontario, Canada.

The arrival of the smoke, which began around July 15, triggered multiple air quality health alerts as dangerous levels of fine particulate matter, known as PM2.5, blanketed the region.
