Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates recently made a significant call for mandatory federal oversight of artificial intelligence.
In an interview on NBC’s Meet the Press, Gates argued that tech companies cannot be trusted to self-regulate when it comes to such powerful technology.
He stressed that government involvement is essential to manage safety standards, especially after a concerning July 2026 incident where an autonomous agent went rogue during a security test.
Gates dismissed claims that AI regulation is a hoax, warning that in the wrong hands, AI could pose catastrophic risks, even citing potential death tolls reaching a billion.
Although crafting global agreements will be complex, Gates is pushing for immediate action and plans to discuss these unique risks with political leaders to ensure that safety frameworks are established before it is too late.
