Philippines imports Russian oil to combat fuel shortage
In late March 2026, the Philippines initiated an urgent shift in its energy strategy by importing Russian crude oil to combat a severe national energy crisis.
However, the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, caused by the ongoing conflict involving the U.S., Israel, and Iran, has crippled this supply chain.

Petron Corporation, the country's sole refiner, received the first shipment of 750,000 barrels via the tanker 'Sara Sky,' facilitated by a temporary U.S. sanctions waiver.
While the current stock is intended to last until June 2026, the government is already exploring broader alternatives, including potential energy cooperation with China in the South China Sea.
