Since May 2026, the World Health Organization (WHO) has been battling a severe Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and Uganda.
Caused by the rare Bundibugyo virus, this crisis has reached significant proportions with no currently approved vaccine or specific treatment available.
The WHO has officially designated it a Public Health Emergency of International Concern.
Containment efforts are proving extremely difficult due to a "perfect storm" of challenges.
