Over 180,000 New Zealanders Still Suffering from Long COVID
According to the 2024/25 New Zealand Health Survey, over 185,000 adults, or approximately 4.3% of the population, are currently living with the lingering effects of COVID-19.
This condition, known as Long COVID, affects women more than men and is more prevalent among Māori and disabled populations.
Long COVID is defined as having symptoms that persist for over four weeks, categorized as either ongoing symptomatic COVID-19 or post-COVID-19 syndrome.
Common challenges include chronic fatigue, brain fog, and mobility issues, which can significantly impact daily life and workforce productivity.
As healthcare providers work to better understand this condition, addressing these gaps remains a priority for the health sector in Aotearoa to support those who continue to struggle long after their initial infection.
