A report released in September 2026 by the Climate Impact Lab warns of a critical humanitarian crisis.
The current 'super' El Niño event is projected to cause 451,000 additional heat-related deaths worldwide between June 2026 and February 2027.
By analyzing data from 24,000 regions, researchers found that this weather pattern leads to a 44% increase in extremely hot days.
The Global South faces the most severe risks, with the Sahel region alone accounting for nearly 67,000 deaths.
However, these figures are not inevitable.
While the study has not yet undergone formal peer review, it serves as an urgent call for governments to prioritize emergency interventions to protect their most vulnerable citizens from extreme heat.
