On September 15, 2026, Bangladesh’s International Crimes Tribunal delivered a historic verdict, sentencing seven high-ranking officials from the ousted Awami League to death.
The leaders were found guilty of crimes against humanity, specifically murder and inciting violence during the intense student-led uprising that gripped the nation in July and August 2024.
Among those convicted are prominent figures such as former General Secretary Obaidul Quader and former State Minister Mohammad Ali Arafat.
The court also ordered the partial confiscation of assets from five of the convicts to provide compensation to the families of victims who lost their lives or were injured during the movement.
This uprising, which resulted in approximately 1,400 deaths, ultimately brought an end to Sheikh Hasina’s 15-year administration.
The tribunal’s decision highlights the government's pursuit of accountability for the violence that reshaped Bangladesh's political landscape.
