San Miguel Corporation plans new bridge to Boracay
A significant infrastructure development is on the horizon for the Philippines.
As of April 2026, the Department of Public Works and Highways has officially awarded the contract for the Boracay Bridge project to San Miguel Holdings Corp.
This 2.54-kilometer bridge system will link Boracay Island to the Panay mainland.
With an investment of ₱7.78 billion, the bridge aims to provide all-weather access, improve emergency services, and support essential utility lines.
By connecting the island to Caticlan, proponents hope to manage tourism pressure by allowing visitors to stay on the mainland.
However, the project is not without controversy.
Local government officials and boatmen have expressed concerns regarding potential livelihood losses and the environmental impact on the island's delicate marine ecosystem.
While the national government is pushing forward under the PPP framework, addressing these local and environmental objections remains a critical hurdle.
For now, SMHC prepares to begin technical and geotechnical studies, marking the start of a project that could reshape travel to one of the world's most famous tourist destinations.
