The Chinese Canadian Museum in Vancouver is currently hosting a compelling exhibition titled "Momentum: Power and Identity in Sports."
Opening on June 10, 2026, and running through September 5, 2027, the display is located in the museum’s Poy Family Gallery.
This exhibition offers a deep look into the history of Chinese Canadian athletes, coaches, and organizers, spanning from the early 1900s to modern times.
Melissa Karmen Lee notes that the project highlights sport as an arena where individuals have navigated their national identity and sense of belonging.
The gallery features an immersive, sports-bar-inspired design, showcasing the stories of over 20 notable athletes like Olympic figure skater Patrick Chan and NBA player Zach Edey.
Visitors can explore historical artifacts, such as an Olympic medal and a 1930s soccer trophy, alongside contemporary art installations like an interactive ping pong piece by Rirkrit Tiravanija.
Timed to coincide with the 2026 World Cup, the exhibition successfully bridges the excitement of major global sports with the essential, often-overlooked history of the Chinese Canadian community.
It is a must-visit for those interested in the intersection of culture, identity, and athletics.
