Lightspeed LA, the Irvine-based subsidiary of Tencent’s Lightspeed Studios, recently confirmed a major workforce reduction.
On July 29, 2026, the studio laid off approximately 80 employees, representing over half of its total staff.
This move is a direct consequence of a strategic pivot regarding 'Last Sentinel,' the studio’s highly anticipated open-world action game set in a near-future Tokyo.
Despite six years of development and a massive budget, internal reviews and playtesting suggested the project was not meeting expectations.
Consequently, the studio is reevaluating its creative direction to get the title back on track.
While the layoffs are significant, Lightspeed LA maintains that North America remains a cornerstone of its global gaming strategy.
Although there is no official release date for 'Last Sentinel,' the studio insists that development is ongoing and that it remains committed to its future.
For now, the focus is on supporting the affected team members and navigating this challenging period of restructuring.
