Japan Selected as Country of Honor at Cannes Film Market
Japan has officially been named the "Country of Honor" for the 2026 Marché du Film, taking place during the 79th Festival de Cannes.
This prestigious selection highlights Japan's massive impact on the global film landscape, following in the footsteps of countries like India and Brazil.
Operating under the theme "Beyond Boundaries: Tradition, Innovation and the Future of Japanese Cinema," the initiative aims to boost international collaboration and highlight Japan's creative influence.
Supported by METI and JETRO, the program will feature specialized showcases, industry summits, and a brand-new "Japan IP Market" designed to help global partners adapt Japanese animation and live-action titles.
With an annual domestic box office revenue exceeding ¥200 billion, Japan's film industry is a powerhouse of creativity, blending historical masters like Kurosawa with contemporary auteurs.
As Cannes executive director Guillaume Esmiol noted, Japan was a natural choice given its deep artistic legacy and the surging global demand for its content.
This designation not only strengthens cultural ties between France and Japan but also provides a global stage to showcase the diverse stories and innovative spirit that define modern Japanese cinema.
