Japan is set to transform its cultural footprint by doubling financial support for its anime, manga, video game, and music industries.
Recognizing these sectors as essential drivers of national economic growth, the government plans to dedicate ¥100 billion annually to the industry, aiming for a total of ¥500 billion over the next five years to boost global expansion.
In 2023, overseas sales of Japanese content hit ¥6 trillion, successfully outperforming the country's semiconductor exports.
With an ambitious goal to reach ¥20 trillion in annual global sales by 2033, Japan is focusing on several strategic areas.
These include improving global distribution networks, utilizing AI-driven translation tools, and cracking down on digital piracy.
This policy shift is largely a response to competitive pressures from the United States and South Korea.
While the government learns from the past struggles of the 'Cool Japan Fund,' it is determined to refine its approach.
Specific funding proposals are expected in the fiscal 2027 budget, marking a new chapter for Japan’s creative economy as it seeks to capture an even larger share of the international market.
