Starting in January 2028, the company will transition to an exclusively digital-first model.

From a business perspective, digital distribution offers Sony higher profit margins by eliminating manufacturing and shipping costs, while granting the company complete control over pricing on the PlayStation Store.
Many fans argue that removing physical media restricts their ability to resell games, impacts game preservation, and limits ownership rights.
So far, the response has included petitions with over 247,000 signatures and a massive $457 million lawsuit filed by a Dutch consumer group.
While some industry figures share these concerns, many analysts believe the digital shift is inevitable.
Sony has shown no signs of reversing its decision, indicating they are prepared to weather the criticism in favor of long-term digital profitability.
