At least 25 dead following stampede at Haitian mountaintop fortress
A tragic incident occurred on April 11, 2026, at the Citadelle Laferrière, a historic UNESCO World Heritage site in Milot, Haiti.
During traditional Easter celebrations, a severe stampede broke out, resulting in the deaths of at least 25 individuals.
Many of the victims were young people visiting the fortress.
Approximately 33 people were hospitalized due to injuries such as respiratory distress.
The remote location of the mountaintop fortress made initial rescue efforts and victim identification difficult.
In response, the Haitian National Police have launched an official investigation into the tragedy, and Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Aime has mobilized resources to support the victims and their families.
As a result of the event, the Citadelle Laferrière has been closed to the public indefinitely.
