FIFA Rejects Requests to Ban Pride Symbols at World Cup Match

FIFA has officially confirmed that rainbow flags and other LGBTQ+ symbols will be permitted at the 2026 World Cup, rejecting formal requests from the Egyptian and Iranian football associations to ban them.
The controversy emerged during a match in Seattle, which coincided with the cityβs Pride weekend.
The two nations argued that these displays conflicted with their cultural and religious values; however, FIFA maintained that such symbols are protected under its 2026 Stadium Code of Conduct as expressions of human rights.
This decision marks a significant shift from the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, where FIFA faced intense criticism for discouraging the use of inclusive symbols like the 'OneLove' armbands and confiscating rainbow items.
While FIFA noted that it does not officially designate any fixture as a 'Pride Match' and maintains rules against offensive displays, it has now explicitly categorized LGBTQ+ symbols as permissible.
As the tournament progresses, the focus remains on balancing freedom of expression with the cultural sensitivities of different countries on the world stage.
