The Eswatini Communications Commission (ESCCOM) has imposed a fine of E150,000 on Jenny Internet Eswatini due to regulatory non-compliance.
The dispute arose after the company was found to be using a private cross-border fibre link to source international internet bandwidth, effectively bypassing the nation's official backbone infrastructure.
According to ESCCOM, this action violated the Electronic Communications Act of 2013 and regulations concerning infrastructure sharing.
By circumventing the national network, the provider failed to follow mandates designed to ensure regulated interconnection.
As part of the ruling, Jenny Internet must pay the penalty by July 30, 2026, and transition its operations to utilize the Eswatini Posts and Telecommunications Corporation (EPTC) backbone.
This case reflects the ongoing tension in Eswatini's telecommunications sector as it navigates the balance between private sector innovation and state-regulated infrastructure.
