Global Observance: International Day for Mine Awareness
Every year on April 4, the world marks the International Day for Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action.
Proclaimed by the United Nations in 2005, this day highlights the ongoing danger of landmines, explosive remnants of war (ERW), and improvised explosive devices.
To address this, the UN Mine Action Service (UNMAS) coordinates global efforts beyond just physical removal.
True 'mine action' includes providing risk education for communities, rehabilitating survivors, destroying stockpiles, and advocating for international treaties like the Anti-Personnel Mine Ban Convention.
Through campaigns like 'Invest in Peace; Invest in Mine Action,' the international community continues to work toward a safer future.
