Australia is tightening its migration laws to stabilize population growth and improve system integrity.
Starting September 2026, the government aims to reduce net overseas migration to 225,000 by 2027-28.
A primary focus is the international student sector.
Most new students will be barred from bringing family dependants to Australia, though exceptions exist for Pacific and ASEAN nations and PhD candidates.
Additionally, a new 'visa hopping' policy prevents students from switching to lower-level courses solely to extend their stay.
Broad visa reforms also include a 'no further stay' condition for visitor visas to prevent them from being used as pathways for residency.
Furthermore, the skilled migration points test now recognizes construction qualifications as equal to university degrees, reflecting a shift toward addressing critical labor shortages in construction, healthcare, and education.
While international education remains a massive economic asset for Australia, Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke stated these reforms prioritize genuine study and an orderly migration process.
These changes reflect a delicate balance between maintaining a robust economy and addressing public concerns about infrastructure and housing capacity.
