U.S. and Japan Partner to Build Major AI and Energy Infrastructure in Ohio
In March 2026, the U.S. government and SoftBank Group announced a groundbreaking partnership to develop a massive artificial intelligence and energy complex in Southern Ohio.
Located at the former Portsmouth Gaseous Diffusion Plant, now known as the PORTS Technology Campus, this project aims to secure the U.S. position in the global AI race.
The facility will feature a 10-gigawatt data center supported by 10 GW of new power generation, primarily fueled by natural gas.
To facilitate this, SB Energy and AEP Ohio are investing $4.2 billion in critical transmission infrastructure.
Notably, this investment includes $33.3 billion in Japanese funding as part of a broader $550 billion commitment to the U.S. economy.
To protect local residents, SB Energy has pledged that new infrastructure costs will not be passed on to Ohioan families or small businesses.
Furthermore, the company has committed to funding the environmental cleanup of the former uranium enrichment site.
