Gujarat assembly passes Uniform Civil Code Bill
On March 24, 2026, the Gujarat Legislative Assembly reached a significant milestone by passing the Gujarat Uniform Civil Code (UCC) Bill, 2026.
This move makes Gujarat the second Indian state to approve legislation aimed at creating a common set of personal laws.
The bill seeks to unify regulations concerning marriage, divorce, inheritance, and live-in relationships for all citizens, regardless of their religious background.
Proponents, including Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, argue the law promotes gender equality and aligns with Article 44 of the Indian Constitution.
The bill, which excludes Scheduled Tribes, now awaits the Governor's assent to become law.
