Voters head to the polls for Ontario federal by-election
On April 13, 2026, Canadian voters are participating in three critical federal by-elections.
This day is a major test for Prime Minister Mark Carney and his Liberal Party, who are currently seeking a stable majority government in the House of Commons.
By-elections are occurring in two Ontario ridings—University—Rosedale and Scarborough Southwest—as well as one riding in Quebec, Terrebonne.
These seats became vacant due to the resignations of former MPs Chrystia Freeland and Bill Blair, and a court-ordered election in Quebec.
The Liberal Party currently holds 171 seats, and capturing additional ridings could solidify their power to pass new laws.
While the Ontario districts have historically been Liberal strongholds, the race in Terrebonne is expected to be very competitive, particularly against the Bloc Québécois.
With 38,000 votes already cast during advance polling, the outcome will provide a clear signal of the public's current approval of the Prime Minister's leadership after his first year in office.
All eligible citizens in these districts are encouraged to cast their ballots to influence the balance of power in the 45th Parliament.
