Tollywood actors strike to demand better safety standards
The Bengali entertainment industry, known as Tollywood, is currently at a standstill.
Since April 7, 2026, thousands of actors and technicians have launched an indefinite strike to demand better safety and security standards on sets.
This movement was triggered by the tragic death of actor Rahul Arunoday Banerjee, who drowned while filming a scene at a beach in Odisha on March 29, 2026.
Following this incident, the West Bengal Motion Pictures Artists’ Forum and the Federation of Cine Technicians and Workers of Eastern India united to suspend all shoots.
The industry is calling for urgent reforms, including mandatory medical support like ambulances on-site and improved insurance coverage.
Legal action has also been taken against the production house, Magic Moments Motion Pictures, for alleged negligence.
Prominent industry figures argue that safety hazards have been overlooked for decades, and they are no longer willing to risk their lives.
The strike will continue until producers provide formal, enforceable guarantees for the safety of all workers.
This rare display of solidarity highlights a growing demand for accountability and systemic change to ensure that artists return home safely after a day of work.
