Major U.S. offshore wind project completes construction
On March 13, 2026, the United States marked a major energy milestone as Vineyard Wind 1, located off the coast of Massachusetts, officially finished construction.
This ambitious project, a partnership between Avangrid and Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners, features 62 turbines capable of generating 800 megawatts of electricity—enough to power 400,000 homes.
Despite facing significant legal challenges and a political environment often hostile to wind energy, the project overcame attempts to halt construction, proving its resilience.
This completion comes as another project, Revolution Wind, begins delivering power to the New England grid.
Together, these developments represent the largest renewable energy efforts east of the Mississippi.
As the Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind project nears completion, the region continues its shift away from fossil fuels, strengthening the power grid against potential winter blackouts.
