As wildfires grow increasingly intense, a new weather phenomenon has captured the attention of scientists: pyrocumulonimbus (pyroCb) clouds.
These are violent, fire-generated thunderstorms that form when intense heat acts like a giant chimney, pumping smoke and moisture high into the atmosphere.
Because these "dirty" clouds can trigger erratic winds, lightning, and even tornado-like fire whirls, they pose a major threat to firefighters and aviators.

By flying high-altitude aircraft like the ER-2 directly through smoke plumes, researchers hope to fill critical gaps in weather forecasting models.
This project is part of NASA’s broader FireSense program, which utilizes a massive range of technology—from orbiting satellites to ground-based AI-powered digital twins—to monitor fires from the forest floor to space.
By integrating this data, NASA aims to provide first responders with the real-time insights they need to make life-saving decisions.

Ultimately, INSPYRE is helping scientists solve a complex, missing piece of the climate puzzle, transforming how we track and respond to extreme wildfire weather across the globe.
