IAEA forum addresses global disparities in cancer treatment

In September 2026, the IAEA Scientific Forum in Vienna focused on the severe global inequality in cancer care.
With cancer deaths projected to double by 2050, the burden falls disproportionately on low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), which suffer nearly two-thirds of all cancer fatalities.
A major issue is the lack of radiotherapy; while high-income nations have abundant access, some LMICs have one machine for 15 million people, or no access at all.
IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi described this lack of care as a 'death by choice,' arguing that treatment is a fundamental right.
To combat this, the IAEA's 'Rays of Hope' initiative is working to bridge the gap.
The program also specifically targets childhood cancer, where survival rates in some areas are below 30% compared to 80% in wealthier nations.
By collaborating with partners like the WHO, the IAEA is helping countries integrate vital radiation medicine into their health systems, turning the fight against cancer into a model for global health equity.
