Existential & Locative

Learn how to describe where things are using 有 (existential 'have') and 在 (locative 'at') in Chinese.

To describe the existence of items in a location (equivalent to "there is / there are" in English), Chinese uses the pattern [Location] + 有 (yǒu) + [Object]:

房間裡杯子

There is a cup in the room.

Alternatively, to describe the specific location of a subject (equivalent to "[Subject] is at [Location]"), use the locative verb (zài):

房間裡

The book is in the room.
