Core Sentences

Learn basic core sentences in Chinese using the copula 是.

Chinese uses the basic Subject-Verb-Object (SVO) order. To describe identity or state "X is Y", we use the verb/copula (shì) directly between the subject and the noun object:

學生

I am a student.

This same SVO structure applies when identifying objects using (zhè - this) or ( - that):

This is a book.
