〜たら

Learn how to formulate hypothetical statements and condition-based actions in Japanese using 〜たら.

To construct "if/when" sentences in Japanese, we use the conditional particle 〜たら (tara) attached to the past tense base of adjectives, nouns, or verbs:

  • 暑い (hot) $ ightarrow$ 暑かった $ ightarrow$ 暑かったら (if it is hot)
  • 静か (quiet) $ ightarrow$ 静かだった $ ightarrow$ 静かだったら (if it is quiet)
暑かったら飲みます

If it is hot, I will drink water.
