〜てもいいです・〜てはいけません

Learn how to ask for or grant permission, and how to express prohibitions in Japanese.

In Japanese, permissions and rules are formed using the verb's te-form:

  • Granting Permission: Combine the te-form with もいいです (mo ii desu - it is okay to).
  • Stating Prohibitions: Combine the te-form with はいけません (wa ikemasen - you must not).
読んでもいいです

You may read a book.

For rules and restrictions:

部屋テニスしてはいけません

You must not play tennis in the room.
