でした・〜かったです

Learn how to describe past states and quality conditions for nouns and adjectives in Japanese.

In Japanese, past tense forms differ for i-adjectives and na-adjectives/nouns:

  • i-adjectives: Drop the final 〜い and add 〜かったです (katta desu).
  • na-adjectives & Nouns: Combine with the past copula でした (deshita).
お茶熱かったです

The tea was hot.

For na-adjectives or nouns:

部屋静かでした

The room was quiet.
