~が好きです・~がほしい

Learn how to express your preferences and desires using ~が好きです (to like) and ~がほしい (to want), using the particle が.

In Japanese, to say you like something, you use the pattern [Noun] が 好きです. Unlike the English word "like" which is a verb, 好き (suki) is a na-adjective. Therefore, the object of your liking is marked by the subject particle (ga) rather than the object particle を.

お茶好きです

I like tea.

To say you want a physical object, you use the pattern [Noun] が ほしいです. ほしい (hoshii) is an i-adjective. Similar to likes, the desired object is marked by the particle (ga) instead of を.

ほしいです

I want a book.
