Learn how to state existence and locations of objects and living beings using ~があります and ~がいます, emphasizing the crucial role of the subject particle が.

In Japanese, we describe existence using the pattern [Subject] が あります/います.

The particle (ga) is crucial here as it marks the subject whose existence is being declared. The verb itself changes depending on whether the subject is living or inanimate:

  • ~があります (~ga arimasu) for inanimate objects (books, cups, etc.)
  • ~がいます (~ga imasu) for living beings (people, animals, etc.)
