The West Virginia University (WVU) Health System, known as WVU Medicine, has announced a definitive agreement to acquire the Pennsylvania-based Independence Health System.
Expected to finalize in late 2026, this move marks a significant expansion for the network into western Pennsylvania.
Independence Health System, formed in 2023 from a merger of Excela Health and Butler Health System, has recently faced various financial and staffing challenges.
WVU Medicine plans to stabilize the region by investing $800 million over five years.
These funds will modernize key facilities, such as the Butler Memorial and Westmoreland hospitals, while implementing a new electronic health record system to improve patient care.
The acquisition will bring five hospitals—Butler Memorial, Clarion, Frick, Latrobe, and Westmoreland—under the WVU umbrella.
This expansion places WVU Medicine in direct competition with major regional providers like UPMC and the Allegheny Health Network, solidifying its presence as a powerful force in the local medical landscape.
